Session #1

Missional Ministry

As one looks at his culture through a missional lens, one sees that people are quick to profess faith, but not many possess faith!

*Culture is formed upstream, and filters down into the suburbs and subcultures. (Cities are key! Notice Paul’s journeys were to major cities almost exclusively!)…Paul: went from city to city (if you can reach the cities you can reach the world)

(James Davison Hunter “Culture and the cities”)

Politics follows culture, it doesn’t make it (people vote in people who will uphold their ideologies not change them)

  1. Mission

-Matt.28:18-20

(deals with pluralism/demonology/ “go” greek tense= “as you go” (missiology=lifestyle)/ “make disciples”, not just community…it’s conversion not just community…not participatory redemption, you have to be one of Jesus’ people not just with them…the line to heaven is single file/ “all nations” not just to gather, but to scatter/ “baptizing” conversion not conversation/ great commission=Trinitarian/ “teaching” no one is born with a theology…/”obedience”/not just working for jesus, but with Jesus

-Two things done at Mars Hill as a priority: celebrate birth and new birth!

i.The mission is to bring the whole world to mature Christianity

ii.Church=city within the city (Matt.5:14)

(“God didn’t lose his divinity, he added humanity” Augustine)

-Spirit-filled like Jesus (brings charismatics and reformists together)

-The whole point of the church is to carry on the ministry of jesus

-The church is the vehicle…

-unity=theological/philosophical/missiological (what are we trying to do) (you cannot love people and use them)/relational (love each other not like one another)

-Equipping saints for the mission (Eph.4)

GO…attractional ministry/ missional ministry (go to culture making centres/media/ new developments

SEE… get curious/ get out of the car/get a new routine/look for the idolatry (sex, comfort) -the opposite of Christianity is not atheism, but it’s idolatry

(worship is trying to copy or do things similar to someone or something that you admire or like)

-where do people go for “comfort”?

-where do people go to “worship”?

FEEL…who is suffering?/

DO…to contend (Jude.9) and to contextualize (1.Cor.9)

-preaching and teaching in the church leads the way

-careful of false functional mediators…

-key to mission=repentance

“all you have to do to become a heretic you just have to stop repenting” JI Packer

(examples of GO,SEE,FEEL,DO=Nehemiah/Paul/Jesus)
