Money cannot buy presence

Dads, ask yourself this question; would your son prefer the latest Finn McMissile, (Disney’s Cars 2 action car) or time with dad? Be careful not to ask your 5 year old because his answer at this stage will probably be the car J Like many family households we have a toy area, where the countless number of toys are stored away.

What I have noticed is that after the excitement has worn off of playing with a new toy for the first time, it gets added to the toys pile. Is this the start of consumerism in our children, always wanting the next best even when what they have is more than sufficient? A topic for another post maybe.

Back to the original question; I don’t believe that the excitement of being in Dad’s presence and being a part of Dad’s world will every wear off, like the new toy. Each ‘encounter’ has a cumulative effect on our child’s development. Consistent, however short, time spent with our children will have a lasting impression on who they become when they are adults. It’s less about what you choose to do, soccer in the back yard, riding bikes together or colouring in pictures.

It’s more about doing it together and it’s our opportunity to show the Father’s heart of love and acceptance to our children. We can carry on buying or we can carry on investing into our children with our presence, the choice is ours.
